It is an internationally accredited qualification and designed to lift the game of practicing and aspiring programme managers, teaching them more about the leadership required rather than just the management skills.

Programme Management helps to Lead, organise, manage, and control projects and the overall programme to achieve the final outcome and meet the objectives set by the business strategy.

MSP was developed to help achieve excellence by improving practices, offering better services and preparing more effectively for the future.

Managing Successful Programmes is an advanced programme management framework for delivering the business benefits required from major change, while addressing the need for sensible governance and control over multiple projects.

A programme is made up of a set of projects and other activities identified by an organization. Together these will deliver some defined strategic level objectives that will enable benefit realization and a substantial change in the business.

A programme can only do well if the projects within it succeed. The concept of a programme is that it should be more than the ‘sum of its parts’. In other words, without Programme Management the projects would probably still be able to deliver their particular outputs but these would not be co-ordinated or integrated in a way that will achieve the strategic goals.

The purpose of the Foundation qualification is to determine whether a candidate has sufficient knowledge and understanding of the MSP guidance to interact effectively with those involved in the management of a programme or act as an informed member of a programme office, business change team or project delivery team working within an environment supporting MSP. The foundation qualification is also a pre-requisite for the practitioner qualification.

Exam Format

  • Multiple choice
  • 70 questions per paper
  • 35 out of 70 marks required to pass
  • 60 minutes duration


The purpose of the Practitioner qualification is to determine whether a candidate has sufficient knowledge and understanding of MSP to apply the guidance to their own work and, hence, act as a Senior Responsible Owner, Programme Manager or Business Change Manager. 

Exam Format

  • Objective testing
  • Eight questions per paper, 80 marks available in total
  • 40 marks required to pass – 50%
  • Two-and-a-half hours’ duration
  • Open book exam. Candidates may use the official printed hard copy of the Managing Successful Programmes Guide
